Biblical View of Light

Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come:

That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles. Acts 26:22-23 KJV

I was recalling a few years back, while I was at work, how on this particular day as I was attending to patients, I could feel as if there was a pair of eyes focused on me so I slowly turned around to see if my suspicion was right and as I did, a woman waiting to be checked in eyes and mine locked, I turned away quickly and each time for the short period of time it took to get her checked in, I would turm around and I could see her continue to stare.

When it was her time to be admitted on the unit she eventually spoke and said; may I ask you a question, I said yes, “the question was, are you a Christian”? I answered her humbly “yes I am” she in turn said, I could tell because I perceived it. Then she proceeded to ask me if I could pray with her, due to policies and procedures praying for someone on the job is prohibited, however I still decided to go ahead and pray for her, so I took her hands and I bowed my head and whispered a  word of prayer for her.

According to Mark “Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” Mark 8:38 KJV

Jesus Christ taught those who followed Him that they were “the light of the world.” He said that you don’t light candles and put them under baskets. When you light a candle, you put it on a candlestick so that it gives light to everyone in the room. Jesus gave us a command in Matthew 5:14-16 that we are not the darkness of the world, we are the light of the world.

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.

Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16 KJV

This was one of the first verses I learned in Sunday school as a child. I also learned a song called ‘this little light of mine I’m gonna let it shine’. Jesus said that we (His people) are the light of the world. We must not hide that light under a bushel or in a church building. We must let it shine. How will people see that light? Through our good works. I do agree with Matthew 5:16 It tells us that we set a good example, if we “let our light shine,” then when others see our good example, they will know that we love our Heavenly Father and they, too, will want to Honor Him

How can you let your light shine?

A few ways are:

Keeping the commandments and choosing to do right.

When we are honest.

When we keep the Sabbath holy.

When we are kind to each other

When we obey the Word of God.

When we dress modestly.

When we use the name of our Heavenly Father Jesus Christ reverently, we are also letting our lights shine. Each small light makes a big difference.

In 2nd Corinthians 4:4 -The apostle Paul speaks of “the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ”. We have that light shining through our lives if our actions reflect the nature of Christ—His love, compassion, and forgiveness. His light shines through our attitudes, words, and deeds. When people see that our lives have been changed so that we have Jesus’ values and see the power of God at work in us, they we will agree that we do have a great Savior. When unbelievers sees people who have been redeemed, they are more inclined to believe that we have a Redeemer. The Christlike life is the platform on which individual testimony becomes convincing.

In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 2nd Corinthians 4:4 KJV

Scripture teaches that “God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth”

This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth 1st John 1-5-6 KJV.

If no light shines from your life, either you do not have a relationship with Christ or you are dishonoring Him. It is a sad thing for someone to proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and continue to live an OPENLY SINFUL LIFE. It brings disrepute to Christ and the gospel. It is a stumbling block for unbelievers. It is certainly not effective in convincing anyone that Christ has the power to transform lives. Our responsibility as disciples and evangelists is to have lives so transformed by the word and the inward presence of Christ that everyone can see his light reflected in our acts of kindness.

We can be good examples. We can share our testimonies with others. We can be missionaries now and invite our friends to primary activities by sharing the good news to others and our faith in Jesus Christ will grow when we let our lights shine.

What a wonderful Savior Jesus Christ our Lord,

Read and be Blessed.
